Beschreibung des Angebots

Global health initiatives influence health systems worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. New knowledge and skills are required to work in meaningful and productive partnerships and to take leading positions within health systems. Leaders and managers have to share and compare across systems and cultures to achieve equitable health systems.

The MBA in International Health Management, offered by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), an associated institute of the University of Basel and a member of the Swiss School of Public Health+ (SSPH+), provides a unique opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills outlined above. The content of the modular programme goes beyond classical MBA programmes in health care, as it maintains a global perspective and interdisciplinary approach throughout, with a strong focus on meso- and macro-level leadership positions.

The long-standing experience and expertise of Swiss TPH in international collaboration in research, teaching and services guarantees high-quality learning experiences, that are always based on empirical and practical evidence. In particular, the experience of Swiss TPH as a Local Fund Agent for the Global Fund and the numerous advisory and supervisory mandates for GAVI, DNDi, the World Health Organization and other global initiatives is relevant for the MBA programme.

Aufbau der Ausbildung

The programme is modular and consists of 10 modules of 6 ECTS Credit Points (CP) each, one module with 10 ECTS CP and a master thesis 20 ECTS CP worth. To obtain the MBA degree 90 ECTS CP have to be accumulated over a period of maximum 5 years. Students who accumulate at least 48 ECTS CP will get a DAS in International Health Management, with the accumulation of 24 ECTS CP a CAS can be obtained.
Each module has three components: a four-week distance-based preparation phase, a one week on-campus tuition phase and a phase of eight weeks after the on-campus tuition in which assignments have to be elaborated and to prepare for the written exams. The total workload for a 6 ECTS CP module will be 180 hours Student Investment Time (SIT).

11 modules and a master thesis / 2 - 3 years part-time (up to a maximum of 5 years)

Language requirements are: TOEFL Paper 550, TOEFL Computer 213, TOEFL internet 79-80, IELTS 6.0 or native speaker or completed higher education in English (with written proof).

Swiss TPH’s MBA in International Health Management caters to all those involved in development cooperation, managing programmes and projects to support countries with resources constraints, or who aspire to such a position. It targets professionals who need strong business management expertise and a sound education in public health. It is of special interest for leaders and managers of Global Health Initiatives.

The full tuition fee for the MBA programme is CHF 31,500.

We do not ask students to pay this amount up front, rather, we adopt a pay-as-you-go approach, whereby you only pay for courses as you register for them. Fees for the courses have to be paid in advance to gain access to the online learning materials.

Tuition fees do not cover insurance, travel expenses or personal living costs incurred during your stay in Basel.  Most courses are CHF 2,450 each, while the Practice Oriented Project (CHF 3,000) and Master thesis (CHF 4,000) are more.
